Fallen stones and overgrown vegetation within the Hebrew Mutual Cemetery
In participating in the clean-up and restoration of the cemetery, one volunteer compared it to the feeling he had when visiting old cemeteries in Europe. Preserving this cemetery is an antitode to the sense of transiency and insecurity many Jews feel.

The Association for the Preservation of Abandoned Jewish Cemeteries, founded in 1999, is committed to the restoration of abandoned Jewish Cemeteries within the Greater Philadelphia area.

The Association represents the Jewish community's desire to preserve sacred and historical burial sites, enhance the efforts of the City of Philadelphia to keep its neighborhoods and communities clean and beautiful, and to preserve portions of history significant to both the Philadelphia Jewish community and the non-Jewish community.
